EyeStyle Tips

Spexstudio Top Eye Style Tips and advice for buying eyewear online.

According to the our dispensing optician, our frame stylists and our image consultant, there are three key points to finding the right spectacle frames:

 1) The frame shape should contrast with your face shape.

 2) The frame size should be in scale with your face size.

 3) Frames should repeat your personal best feature (such as a gold frame to complement blonde hair).

Shapes

Experiment! Don’t be afraid to try a new look. Whether your face is round, square, or oval, there are styles available to complement your features. These guidelines make choosing your frames easier.

For a round, full face, the best style of frame is a squarish or angular shape. It will achieve a slimming, lengthening effect, especially if the frame is slightly wider than your face. Also look for a clear bridge which can widen the eyes.

If you have a long, narrow face (oblong) with a squarish chin, a frame that is kept within the borders of your face will add width. Low triangular, round, or square frames will shorten and soften the angles of your face. Details at the temples help to add width to the face.

If your facial structure is square – a wide forehead, cheek, and chin area – you can soften the angles and add length by choosing frames with more width than depth, such as narrow ovals. Rimless frames also help to balance a square facial structure.

The shape and size of your nose can be enhanced by the selection of the right bridge piece. A long nose can be shortened with a low bridge piece, while a short nose will look more prominent with a high one. A wide nose can appear slimmer if you wear a dark-toned bridge piece. Finally, a wide bridge piece will visually widen the space between your eyes.

A heart-shaped face has a wide forehead and narrow chin. Try frames that are the opposite shape – wider at the bottom, narrower at the top. Rimless frames are also a good choice.

Triangular faces with wide cheeks and jaws but narrower foreheads benefit from cat’s eye frames or frames that have a bright colour along the top of the frame.

Colour

Target the best frame colour just as you would choose the right makeup – look for shades that complement (rather than contrast with) your skin tone. Eye colour should be a secondary consideration. If your skin tone is warm (with yellow undertones), look for gold, copper, khaki, coral, or red. Wood or light tortoiseshell finishes are good for you, too. Women with cool skin tones (with pink or blue undertones) should look for colours in the same spectrum: black, blue-gray, plum, pink, platinum, etc.

Lenses

After deciding what kind of glasses you want (for work, for sports, prescription sunglasses, etc.) Consider the lenses that are best for the activities you plan to do while wearing the glasses.

Here’s a short list of typical questions to ask yourself:

I work at a computer all day. Is there anything that can help with eye strain from looking at a fixed light source?

We recomend: UV protection and Antireflection lenses

I do a lot of driving at night. Is there anything I can do to cut down on the glare from headlights?

We recomend: Antireflection lenses

I don’t want to have to switch from regular glasses to sunglasses all the time. What are my options?

We recomend: Plastic Photochromic lenses

Below are details of lens features we have available:

Scratch resistant lenses – make plastic lenses more resistant to scratches.

Tints – reduce glare in sunlight and used to make prescription sunglasses.

UV Blocking lenses – protect the eye from dangerous rays from sunlight that can cause ageing of the eye.

Anti reflective lenses – help your vision when driving at night or when working on a computer screen – they also make your lenses less noticeable on your face too especially in photographs.

Light reactive lenses – lenses adjust to light and go darker and lighter.

Polarised Lenses – Blocks glare from the sun.

Bifocal lenses – two lenses combined in one allowing distance and near vision.

Varifocal lenses – Allow combined vision from distance to near including intermediate vision with no visible dividing line.

Extra thin lenses - 35% thinner and lighter and flatter than ordinary lenses.

Super thin lenses – 45% thinner lighter and flatter than ordinary lenses.

Eye-Makeup Tips

The type of lens you wear can affect how your makeup looks so keep your glasses in mind when applying cosmetics. If you’re long sighted sighted, a convex plus lens is prescribed. Since this has a tendency to magnify your eyes, a less is more approach is best with eye shadows. – or better still, you should consider a thinned down lens with an antireflection coating if your prescription is greater than +3.50 dioptres.

If you’re short sighted, you need a concave or minus lens. This will make your eyes appear smaller, so your makeup should be a bit stronger or again consider a thinned down lens with antireflection coating. Regardless, an extra coat of mascara (brown or black) will help to define your eyes behind your glasses. When applying the final touches, put your glasses on to check the results.

Noses to minimise a large nose choose frames with a low bridge – to maximise smaller noses chose glasses with a high bridge.
