FAQ's
Q 1: What do I need to get started and place an order?
A. In order to place an order with us for spectacles you simply need to get a copy of your spectacle prescription from your optician or optometrist. Your optician is legally obliged to give you your prescription after an eye test. You may already have a valid copy. If you have lost or misplaced it, you can call your optician and request another copy and ask that they send it to you by post, fax or simply arrange to collect it. They may make a small charge to issue a repeat prescription. If you are going to have an eye test, you may also request for your pupilary distance (P.D) to be measured too - this detail may or may not be given to you - as it is normally measured when you have glasses dispensed. The cost of eye tests vary from optician to optician but currently average around £15 - £25 and are still FREE to Full Time students under 19 and many other NHS categories like people over 65 and those on Income Support or claiming Working Family Tax Credit or others on low income. Eye tests are also paid for by employers in some cases - if you work regularly with computers in line with EU Health and Safety legislation. Your Health and Safety Officer or Human Resources Manager will have more information about this or you can ask them to look at our information regarding corporate eyewear. You can go to any optician for an eye test - unlike your GP - you are not registered to any single optician. If for some reason you are unable to obtain a copy of your
prescription and have not had another eye test - as qualified opticians we can copy the prescription exactly that is in your existing glasses and when necessary also measure your P.D at one of our road shows. (Assuming your glasses are based on a valid prescription, less than 2 years old in most cases). If you need more information regarding eye tests please go to Eye Care Advice. Once you have a valid prescription, browse through our frame categories or online shop to chose your glasses, your budget and your look - it's really just that simple!
Q 2: Do I have to order on line?
A. Not at all - apart from ordering online via this website - you can order by downloading our fax order form and then completing the details and sending us payment by credit card or cheque via our faxline on 0871 2884332 or by post - alternatively you can call us and place your order by phone on 0871 2884331.
Q 3: Do you accept NHS and Eyecare Vouchers?
A.Yes we do. Please click here for more information and advice.
Q 4: Can you organise eye tests at your road shows?
A. Yes! As we are qualified opticians this can be arranged, we would however need to speak to you and your organisation to understand the numbers involved and your precise requirements and the suitability of the venue and logistics etc. before arranging this.
If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to email them to enq@spexstudio.co.uk
Q 5: What are your lenses made from?
A. High quality, lightweight, CR39 plastic hard ophthalmic resin (1.5 index) lenses - as we are qualified opticians ourselves - we provide you exactly the same high quality lenses as used by your own optician and leading optical chains.
Q 6: Can I get thinner lenses?
A. We can offer lenses, that will reduce the weight and thickness of your lenses. Our optometrist would recommend our thin lenses for prescriptions over +/- 3.00 Dioptres, and very thin for higher prescriptions over+/-4.50 Dioptres.
Q 7: Do you sell bifocal lenses?
A. Yes. They are D28 bifocals - these are standard bifocals most commonly worn. They are set at a height 3mm below the lens centre as calculated by our optometrist based on the frames we supply.
Q 8: Do you sell varifocal lenses?
A. We currently do not recommend you buy varifocals directly on-line - unless you have either been fitted with the frame you have chosen and professionally measured at one of our road shows - in which case our staff will sort everything out for you with no worries! - alternatively we advise you that you phone us (or order online using our “try before you buy” option) and we can supply you a frame and send you a small simple measuring kit to allow you to take the measurements we need - if you can do this and return the frames and ideally (though not essential) send us a picture (from your mobile phone or digital camera) of yourself wearing the glasses either by email or post we can then measure and dispense varifocal lenses for you.
Q 9: What is an anti reflection coating?
A. It is a coating on the lens surface that will make the lenses look more transparent and by allowing more light through the lens it improves the contrast of what you are seeing as well as the cosmetic appearance. As qualified opticians we would strongly recommend you take advantage of our on line prices and enjoy the benefits of anti-reflection lenses whenever you buy a pair of glasses at Spextstudio. 99% of all Opticians who wear glasses chose to have anti-reflection lenses! Any good camera lens will also have an anti-reflection coating on it to improve it’s optical performance. If it good enough for a camera lens it good enough for your eyes! Our high quality coated reflection-free lenses also come supplied with a scratch resistant and a water resistant coating too. We especially recommend reflection-free lenses if you regularly drive - especially at dusk or night or work in office environments with fluorescent strip lights and with computers screens 0r if you have a high prescription (greater than +/-3.50 dioptres).
Q 10: What are photochromic lenses?
A. They are lenses that go dark in sunlight and nearly clear at night. They go darkest when it is bright and cold. When it is hot they will not go quite as dark.
We recommend plastic photochromic lenses which are available in grey and brown.
Q 11: What are polarising lenses?
A. Polarising lenses reduce glare from horizontal surfaces. They are very popular with anglers and sailors and are often found on sunglasses (check out our range of non prescription sunglasses.
Q 12: What tints do you offer?
A. We offer a range of different colours for reducing glare with dark (80% absorption), which is a sunglass tint ideal for prescription sunglasses. Non - standard tints are available by special order via our phone line.
Q 13: What are thin lenses?
A. These reduce weight and thickness of your lenses. We recommend thin lenses on prescriptions over +/-3.00. Our thin lenses are knife edge, aspheric or high index, whichever are most suitable foryour prescription. We automatically provide thin lenses with an anti-reflection coating as recommended by our optometrist.
Q 14: What are super thin lenses?
A. These reduce weight and thickness more effectively than thin lenses. Our optometrist recommends very thin lenses on prescriptions over +/-4.50. Our very thin lenses are high index and aspheric. Our very thin lenses are anti reflection coated as standard.
Q 15: Can you explain frame measurements?
A. The best guide to frame measurement is to look at your current spectacles.
The Eye size can be thought of as the size of the lens in your frames measured from rim to rim from the joint nose pad to the side of the frame in mm and is typically in the range of 46 (small) to 56 (large).
The Bridge size will typically be in the range 16 to 22. Most average frames bridge sizes are between 18 and 20 and can be thought to be the distance between the nose pads in a frame.
The Side length is normally 130 (short), 135 (medium) or 140 (long) and it can be described as the length of the side arm from the temple to behind the ear..
These measurements can normally be found on the inside of the bridge (nose part) or on the side of the frame and are often seen in written in the form 52x18x135 (eye size x bridge x side length) as an example.

Q 16: Can you give me advice on choosing my frames?
A. Good way of getting an idea of frame sizes is to look at the gallery of our 4 models wearing specs - all 4 deliberately have different facial features and skin colour so you can get a good idea of what our frames and their sizes will look like on you.
You can also look at your existing glasses (assuming they are comfortable) and chose a similar shape or style - your existing frames will also should have the existing frame sizes described above marked on them.
Reading our Eye Style Tips before choosing your frames will help.
You should look at our style rating - this is a unique rating we have given that describes the frame in terms raning from classic traditional styles (one and two star) to most fashionable styles today (four and five star).

Q 21: What is the Pupillary Distance (PD)?
A. This is the distance between you pupil centres when you look into the distance.
It varies from 60mm to 66mm in most adults.
It is best to get this measurement from your Optometrist or
Optician, however if necessary, you can measure it yourself using a mirror and a millimetre ruler.
1. Place the ruler flat against you forehead and with your right eye closed, line up the zero on the ruler with your left pupil centre.
2. Then with your left eye closed, take a reading of the ruler at your right pupil centre.
This gives your distance PD.

If you have difficulty seeing what you are doing, then you can ask someone to help you.
If it is easier, line up the outside of the iris of one eye with the inside of the iris of the other eye.
Your near PD is 3mm less than your distance PD, as your eyes move closer together when you read.
We need your distance PD if you are ordering distance or bifocal glasses and your near PD if you are ordering reading glasses.
If you do not supply your PD measurement, we will set distance optical centres at an average PD of 63mm as calculated by our optometrist.

Example 1. shows a person who is shorted-sighted (which is why there is a minus sign in the sphere box (sph) and has astigmatism (which is why there ia a number in the cyl box) and the axis tells us the direction in the astigmatism.

Example 2. shows a person who is long-sighted (which is why there is a plus sign in the sphere box (sph) and has astigmatism (which is why there ia a number in the cyl box) and the axis tells us the direction in the astigmatism.
Example 3. shows a person who is long-sighted (which is why there is a plus sign in the sphere box (sph) and has astigmatism (which is why there ia a number in the cyl box) and the axis tells us the direction in the astigmatism. The Add shows that this person also needs a prescription for reading so they may have 2 pairs of glasses for far and reading or a pair of bifocals or varifocals.
